DOVER — The keynote speaker at Friday’s Go Red for Women celebration called for encouragement of young girls to study science, technology and mathematics.
The initiative is called “Stem Goes Red.”
Shante’ Hastings, a civil engineer, said interest in those fields will ultimately bring more female scientists and researchers in medical fields.
“They are going to be the ones to cure cancer … to cure heart disease,” which is the No. 1 killer of women, Ms. Hastings said.
Ms. Hastings, whose two daughters attended the event Friday at Dover Downs Hotel, said little girls and young women need to know that “smart girls are cool and they can do anything they put their minds to.”
